Quick summary
Most expat employees enter Qatar on a work residence permit sponsored by the employer. The 2020 reforms ended the no-objection certificate requirement for changing employers, employees can transfer after serving notice. The Qatar Visa Centre handles in-country issuance for many nationalities pre-arrival.
The work residence permit
The standard Qatar work visa is a residence permit issued by the Ministry of Interior, tied to an employer-issued work permit on the Ministry of Labour's digital platform. The permit is renewable annually and is the document authorising both employment and residence. The employer pays for visa issuance, the medical examination, fingerprinting, and Qatar ID (QID), under Article 8 of the Labour Law these are recruitment costs the employer must bear.
The Qatar Visa Centre
For many nationalities, biometric processing, medical examinations, and contract authentication are completed at a Qatar Visa Centre (QVC) in the country of origin before the employee travels to Qatar. This pre-arrival processing, introduced in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup, has been retained as a permanent fixture for labour migration from QVC-covered countries.
Visa cancellation
On contract end, the employer cancels the work permit and (where the employee is leaving Qatar) the residence permit. Cancellation during a notice period, before the contractual end date, is a breach and constitutes wrongful termination. The employee typically has a grace period after cancellation to either secure new sponsorship or exit Qatar.
Family sponsorship
Employees whose monthly salary meets the dependent-sponsorship threshold (commonly cited around QAR 10,000/month) can sponsor a spouse and minor children for family residence permits. The dependent visa is tied to the employee's residence permit and is renewed alongside it.
Worked example
Dina is offered a senior product role in Doha on a QAR 35,000 total package. Her employer issues the work visa, pays for her QVC processing in her home country, books her medical examination in Doha, and covers fingerprinting and QID issuance. Total recruitment cost to the employer: around QAR 4,000–6,000 plus relocation. Dina pays nothing for any of these, the law makes them the employer's responsibility.
Frequently asked questions
Can my employer charge me for my work visa?
No. The Labour Law requires the employer to bear all recruitment costs, work permit, residence permit, medical, fingerprinting, QID, and contract authentication. Any attempt to recover these costs from the employee is a breach.
What's the Qatar Visa Centre process like?
Biometrics + medical + contract authentication, completed in your home country before travel. Processing typically takes one to three weeks depending on the country. The employer or a relocation agent coordinates the appointment.
Can I bring my parents to Qatar?
Parents can be brought on visit visas easily; permanent dependent-residence status for parents is more restrictive and tends to depend on the employee's salary level and seniority. Speak to an immigration consultant for the current policy.
What if my visa is cancelled before my notice period ends?
That's a breach. Your residence permit must remain valid for the duration of your contractual notice. File a complaint with the Ministry of Labour and consult a lawyer, premature cancellation can entitle you to wrongful-termination compensation in addition to your standard entitlements.
When to consult a labour lawyer
Talk to a Qatari immigration lawyer if your employer is asking you to pay for any element of your visa, your residence permit is being cancelled prematurely, or you're moving between mainland and Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) employers, where different visa frameworks apply.
