Bahrain working hours & overtime

Standard working hours

Article 51 of Bahrain Labour Law No. 36 of 2012 caps standard working hours at 48 per week or 8 per day. During Ramadan, the daily standard drops to 6 hours (36 per week) for Muslim employees. Some employers extend the reduction to all staff as a matter of policy.

The weekly rest day

Article 56 makes Friday the statutory weekly rest day. It is a paid rest day. Many Bahrain private-sector firms now run a Saturday–Sunday weekend (mirroring the public-sector reform of 2006 when the GCC weekend pattern began to shift) or a Friday– Saturday weekend. Where the contract specifies a different rest day for operational reasons, the same protections apply.

Overtime

Article 53 sets the overtime regime:

  • 125% of basic wage for overtime worked during the day.
  • 150% of basic wage for overtime worked at night (between 7:00 PM and 7:00 AM).
  • 150% of basic wage + compensatory day off for work on the weekly rest day or a public holiday.

Overtime is capped at two hours per day in standard circumstances. Total daily working time including overtime generally cannot exceed 11 hours.

Outdoor-work summer regulation

Ministerial Order No. 3 of 2013 prohibits outdoor work in direct sunlight from 12:00 noon to 4:00 PM during the months of July and August. The ban applies to construction, landscaping, and other outdoor activities. Violations carry significant penalties.

Who is exempt

Senior management and executive employees with delegated authority are typically exempt from the working-hours regime under Article 50. The test is the substance of the role, title alone is insufficient. Domestic workers, seafarers, and other specialised categories have their own regulations.

Worked example

Karim earns BHD 900 basic on a 48-hour week. His hourly basic rate is approximately BHD 900 ÷ (48 × 4.33) ≈ BHD 4.33/hour. He works 3 extra hours on a Tuesday evening (after 7 PM) and 5 hours on Friday (his rest day). Tuesday-night overtime: 3 × BHD 4.33 × 1.5 = BHD 19.50. Friday overtime: 5 × BHD 4.33 × 1.5 = BHD 32.48, plus a compensatory day off. Total weekly premium: ~BHD 52 on top of standard wage.

Frequently asked questions

Do Ramadan reduced hours apply to non-Muslim employees?

Statutorily, the reduction is for Muslim employees. In practice many Bahraini employers extend it to all staff for operational simplicity. The reduction cannot be unilaterally imposed on non-Muslim staff against their wishes.

Is my weekend Friday or Saturday-Sunday?

Friday is the statutory weekly rest day. Many private-sector firms run a Friday–Saturday weekend; some operate Saturday–Sunday (especially financial firms aligned with international markets); a small number still operate a six-day week with Friday off.

Can I be required to work on Bahrain National Day?

Yes, with the 150% premium and a compensatory day off in lieu. Continuous-operation industries (oil, hospitality, healthcare, security) routinely staff public holidays under these rules.

What if I'm a 'manager', do I still get overtime?

Probably not, if your role meets the Article 50 exemption criteria (genuine executive authority, delegated decision-making power, supervisory responsibility). Title alone isn't enough, the substance of the role determines exemption.

When to consult a labour lawyer

Consult a labour lawyer if your employer claims you're exempt from overtime on a job-title basis rather than the substance of your role, refuses the 125% / 150% premium for evening or rest-day work, or directs outdoor work during the prohibited summer hours.
